With 44.000 square kilometers, which corresponds approximately to the size of the Netherlands, Rio de Janeiro is the smallest of the four states of Brazil´s Southeast region. Its capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro is, with 6 million inhabitants, behind São Paulo, the second largest metropolitan area of the country.

This state preserves about 280.000 hectars of Atlantic Rainforest / (Mata Atlântica) in form of 21 integral protection conservation units (see map). Of particular ecotouristic interest are the Ilha Grande State Park, the Juatinga Ecological Reserve and the national parks Serra da Bocaina, Serra dos Órgãos and Tijuca.
