Atlantic Rainforest Biome
Seasonal Rainforest Ecosystems

Saisonregenwald   Bosque Estacional   Floresta Estacional
The deciduous and semideciduous seasonal rainforest (Floresta Estacional Decidual and Semidecidual) are ecosystems of the Atlantic Rainforest biome that occur mostly in the higher and cooler elevations of the mountains ranges in Southeastern Brazil (see map).

The seasonal rainforest is characterized by a tropical summer and a dry winter (different than the nonseasonal tropical rainforest that has no dry season).

Seasonal rainforests are called deciduous when they loose more than 50% of their foliage during the dry season and semideciduous when they loose between 20 and 50% of their leafs during the dry season.
Seasonal Rainforest

Similar to the tropical rainforest ecosystems, also the seasonal rainforests can be further divided into so - called altitudinal zones. Examples of deciduous seasonal rainforests can be found at the border of the Caatinga - Biome in Northeastern Brazil. Semideciduous seasonal rainforests can be found in Southeastern Brazil, among others in the following protected areas:

    • Serra da Mantiqueira and Itatiaia National Park
    • State Parks: Carlos Botelho, Cantareira, PETAR and Campos do Jordão
