The São Paulo City Green Belt
Biosphere Reserve

satellite map) surrounds the São Paulo
metropolitan area which comprises 39 municipalities and covers an area of 805.300 ha with a population of more than 16
million inhabitants.
This corresponds to a demographic concentration of more than 2.000 inhabitants/km2. São Paulo
is considered the second largest city on earth concentrating 10% of the Brazilian population with an extremely low natural
environment index per inhabitant. The São Paulo Green Belt Biosphere Reserve is integrant
part of the
Mata Atlântica
Biosphere Reserve
and its main aim is to conserve and restore ecological corridors
in order to conserve and restore the biological diversity, which is among the richest in the world.
The Biosphere Reserve "Cinturão Verde de São Paulo" comprises among others the Albert Löfgren-,
Jurupurá, Jaraguá, Juquery,
Serra da Cantareira- and
Serra do Mar
state parks,
the Morro Grande Natural Reserve and the Itapeti Ecological Station.
