Ecosystem Tropical Rainforest
Alluvial Zones

Galeriewald   Bosque de Galería   Mata Ciliar

Alluvial rainforest (floresta ombrófila densa aluvial) occurs azonal (height - independent) along the rivers and streams of the tropical rainforest ecosystem. It is very often named "riparian" or "gallery" rainforest. Floristic stratification and composition is similar to the one of the lowland rainforest.

As happens in inundation areas of the longer rivers, the riparian or gallery rainforest frequently adjoins pioneer formation areas, both due to fluvial influence (restinga and herbaceous swamps) and due to fluvial-marine influence (mangroves), with the latter being more commonly found on the lower stretches of the rivers, near the respective discharges. Characteristic species of the alluvial zone are:

Riparian / Gallery Rain Forest

ipê-da-várzea (Tabebuia umbellata), jacataúva (Citharexylum myrianthum), tapiá-guaçu (Alchornea glandulosa), pinha-do-brejo (Talauma ovata), guamirins and cambuis (Eugenia spp., Gomidesia spp., Myrcia spp.), cupiúva (Tapirira guianensis), caroba (Jacaranda puberula), jacarandá-lombriga (Andira fraxinifolia), gerivá (Syagrus romanzoffianum).
