Restinga (salt marsh) is an
ecosystem
of the
Atlantic
Rainforest
biome,
that belongs to the group of pioneer formations with marine influence.
It occurs in the area between the inner dunes
and the
lowland
altitudinal zone
of the
tropical rainforest
ecosystem, where it is protected from the influence of the sea.
Restinga is a term used to designate the coastal plains covered by marine deposits,
resulting from
geological
processes around 5 thousand years ago, during the Quaternary.
Past marine levels have oscillated in such a way as to cause the sedimentation in different
terraces, which are testimony of this alternating depositing.
