Atlantic Rainforest
Climate

Regenwald - Klima    Bosque Atlántico - Clima    Mata Atlântica - Clima
The climate of the Atlantic Rainforest / (Mata Atlântica) is influenced by tropical and subtropical air masses.

Proximity to the ocean, regional atmospheric dynamics, and the shape of the relief are the main factors which contribute in turning the local climate predominantly warm and humid, characterized by high temperatures, mist in the upper part of the mountains and increased humidity.

Distribution of rainfall in this part of Brazil is quite irregular, but generally speaking the coldest and driest period is from May to August (winter) and the hottest and rainiest period from November to March (summer). For the medium monthly temperatures and precipitations in different Brazilian locations please refer to this climate map.
Climate

The average pluviometric precipitation is substantial in the Montane Rain Forest formation (about 2.000 mm) and the coastal area (1.700 mm). In the Cloud Forest formation of the Serra do Mar occur average precipitations above 3.000 mm, which is comparable to the Amazon. In winter, during the month of June, July and august the minimum temperature can reach less than 10șC and in summer, during the month of December, January and February, the maximum temperature varies between 37șC and 40șC.

The hydrological cycle consists of the continuous evaporation of the ocean waters being transformed into humid masses which are transported by the winds toward the continent and pressed agains the mountainsides, thus being forced to rise. As they rise, they become cooler and reach the lower temperatures prevailing on the highest portions of the mountains. In this way, the humidity is condensed in the form of mist or rain, which eventually give rise to the lush flora of the Atlantic Rainforest
