In the southern hemisphere the cold temperate climate zone extends from the Antarctic Circle at 66,5 degrees south latitude and the South Pole. The angle of the plane of the sun´s apparent path varies between 23,5° and 0° and the angle of the sun´s rays (Solar Altitude) between 47 and 0 degrees. Day length varies between +/- 0 h and +/- 24 h from 12 h at the Equinox and the average temperatures are between minus 17 and minus 33 degrees Celsius.

At the Antarctic Circle the sun doesn´t set (rise) for one day during the Solstices on 21st of December (Summer Solstice) and 21st of June (Winter Solstice). Towards the South Pole the number of polar days (24 h daylight) and polar nights (24 h night) constantly increase. At the South Pole the Sun doesn´t set for half a year during summer and doesn´t rise for half a year during winter.
