The peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean in the east from the Maraú River and the
Camamu Bay in the west.
The conservation unit protects a large number of coastal
AtlanticRainforestecosystems such as
mangroves,
restinga and
tropical rainforest.
There are several traditional fishing villages on Maraú such as Maraú village, Taipu de Dentro, Campinho (west)
or Algodões and Saquaíra (east)
