The Maraú Environmental Protection Area (APA) is a
Sustainable Use
Conservation Unit
of the Mata Atlântica
Biosphere Reserve
in the state of Bahia. The peninsula is located on the Dende coast 200 km south of
Salvador, 100 km north of
Ilheus and 30 km from
Itacaré.
The peninsula separates the Atlantic Ocean in the east from the Maraú River and the Camamu Bay in the west. The conservation unit protects a large number of coastal Atlantic Rainforest ecosystems such as mangroves, restinga and tropical rainforest. There are several traditional fishing villages on Maraú such as Maraú village, Taipu de Dentro, Campinho (west) or Algodões and Saquaíra (east) |
