Juréia - Itatins Ecological Station

Juréia - Itatins    Juréia - Itatins    Juréia - Itatins
The Juréia - Itatins Ecological Station is an Integral Protection Conservation Unit of the Atlantic Rainforest Southeast Reserves World Heritage Site and part of the Mata Atlântica Biosphere Reserve in the state of São Paulo. It is located 210 km southwest of the capital close to the colonial town of Iguape (see map).

Juréia - Itatins is the local name for the coastal mountain range Serra do Mar in that region. The neoproterozoic Juréia and the paleoproterozoic Itatins constitute the northeastern limit of the Curitiba terrain, which during the Brasiliano - Pan African cycle collided against the northern Apiaí terrain (southern Ribeira belt).

The Serra da Juréia is isolated by the Una do Prelado River, a black-water river that winds parallel to the Atlantic coast for about 50 km. There are still 9 indigenous families living within the ecological station. Once a year, during the famous procession of Nossa Senhora Aparecida de Iguape, Juréia - Itatins is open to public.
