According to vegetation map of the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) from 1993, the ecosystems of the Atlantic Rainforest biome can be divided into:

  • Pioneer Formations ( Mangrove and Restinga)

  • Tropical Rainforest (Floresta Ombrófila)

  • Seasonal Rainforest (Floresta Estacional)

 • Altitude Fields (Campos de Altitude)

Based on altimetric and pedalogical (soil studies) research, these ecosystems can be divided into finer subunits, so - called altitudinal zones.
