Campos de Altitude

german     spanish     portuguese
Campos de altitude (altitude fields) is an ecosystem of the Atlantic Rainforest biome that connects above about 2.000 m to the high montane altitudinal zone of the tropical and seasonal rainforest ecosystem.

The predominant elements are herbaceous and brushy species such as poaceae, syperaceae, asteraceae and mimosaceae. The lower brushy species frequently occur in the middle of a dense gramminoid carpet. The disjoined character and the geographical isolation of this ecosystem are relevant factors for the occurrence of biodiversity and endemism.

The campos de altitude ecosystem can be found among others in the following protected areas:

    • National Parks: Itatiaia, Serra da Bocaina and Serra dos Órgãos
    • State Parks: Serra do Mar Cantareira, Campos do Jordão and Pico do Marumbi.
