Rio de Janeiro Travel & Tours - With 44.000 square kilometers, which corresponds approximately to the size of the Netherlands, Rio de Janeiro is the smallest state of Brazil's Southeast region. Its capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro is, with 6 million inhabitants, behind São Paulo, the second largest metropolitan area of the country.

This state preserves about 280.000 hectars of Atlantic Rainforest / (Mata Atlântica) in form of 21 integral protection conservation units (see map). Recommended ecotourism and adventure tour destinations are Ilha Grande State Park, Juatinga / Paraty and the national parks of Serra da Bocaina, Serra dos Órgãos and Tijuca.
