Brazil Social / Cultural Tours - During
colonial
Brazil,
so - called
quilombos were places to where the African
slaves escaped in order to hide from the Portuguese.
Most of the time, these were remote places, in the mountains and valleys, with difficult access by
dense raiforest
trails.
Therefore, in many Brazilian maps still appears the name quilombo (e.g.
serra / vale do quilombo).
With the time, these hiding - places became little communities, the so - called
quilombolas.
Nowadays, quilombolas can be found all over the
Atlantic
Rainforest region and are gradually being recognized by the Brazilian goverment.
Some of them are part of our
eco tours.
