Day
1: São Paulo
In the morning, guided walk through the
historic centre
of
São Paulo,
the japanese village
Liberdade and little Italy
Bela Vista.
After lunch, visit of
Brazil's largest known howler monkey colony at
Cantareira
State Park.
Joint diner at a typical barbecue restaurant (
Churrascaria).
Day 2 – 3: Ilhabela
Transfer to
Ilhabela and short walk through
tropical rainforest,
along a charming river with several natural pools and little cascades.
The second day, hike on remote rainforest trails to a little fishing community at one of the most beautiful and isolated beaches
on the backside of the island.
Return by canoes (hollowed tree trunks) of the fishermen.
Day 4 – 5: Serra do Mar
At
Serra do Mar
Statepark you will visit the national monument
Casa da Farinha, a former alcohol, sugar cane and manioc mill,
a
quilombo village where the descendants of African
slaves live and the
mangrove swamps of the Bicas river.
The
Jatobá trail takes you to the natural pool
Poço da Rasa, first part of an 8 hours historic dense rainforest trail,
which prior to the construction of the Rio - Santos highway in 1975 was used by the locals to get to the holy mass in Paraty and to commercialize their products.
From a former hippy community and one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil we hike to the borderline of the states of
São Paulo and
Rio de Janeiro
where an enormous granitic rock provides us with a spectacular view on the Juatinga reserve, our next destination.
Day 6 – 7: Juatinga
The traverse of the
Juatinga
Ecological Reserve, where until today no electricity is available, is for sure one of the highlights of this trekking adventure.
Passing the "dream" beaches
Sono,
Antigona and
Antiguinha, we reach at the end of the first day
a little
caiçara village in the extreme south of the peninsula.
After a steep ascent and descent through
submontane and
montane forest
and a long hike along the coast to
Martim de Sá we reach at the end of the second day the beautiful bay of Cajaíba.
Day 8 – 9: Paraty
Boat transfer to
colonial
Paraty and in the afternoon, visit
of the historical centre. The next day, hike along a less known section of one of the ancient
gold
trails (
Trilha do Ouro) at
Serra da Bocaina
National Park
and in the afternoon visit of one of the last traditional sugar cane (
cachaça) distilleries.
Day 10 – 11: Ilha Grande
Transfer to
Ilha Grande.
On our way, visit of an amazing waterfall and the historic centre of Mambucaba, after Paraty, the second important gold
shipping point of the 17th century.
The next day, either hike to the wild beaches on the southern part of Ilha Grande or climb of the islands second highest peak.
Day 12 – 13: Rio de Janeiro
Visit of the magnificent
pioneer formations of the
Guaratiba Biological Reserve and transfer to
Rio de Janeiro.
The next day, visit of Copacabana, the
Tijuca National Park
including the Christ statue at
Corcovado and a hike to
Pico da Tijuca, with 1.022 m the highest elevation of
Rio de Janeiro. Optional: visit of the sugar loaf key
Day 14: Rio de Janeiro – São Paulo
Transfer to São Paulo and return to GB or USA.
