The Lagoa do Peixe
National Park
is an
integral protection
conservation unit
of the
Mata Atlântica
Biosphere Reserve
in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
It is part of the Ramsar Convention (international recognized humid areas) and located 190 km south of Porto Alegre. Tours start from Mostardas or Tavares.
The lagoon with a length of 35 km, a width of 1,5 km and a depth of 20 - 60 cm is inserted between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoa dos Patos lagoon,
the second largest lagoon in South America. The park protects 34.000 ha of pioneer formation
ecosystems
(beaches, dunes,
mangrove and
restinga) of the
Atlantic
Rainforest.
The main
ecotourism
attractions of the park (and surroundings) are: the fishing villages of Tavares and Mostardas,
the hiking & mountain bike trails (earth- and sand road) that cross and surround the lagoon (das Dunas, das Figueiras e do Talha - Mar),
the lighthouses Mostardas, Solidão, Capão da Marca and da Marca de Fora, the
sambaquis, the dunes
and principally the observation of more than 180 bird species (between residents and migratories).
