Brazil Tours / Geology - Gondwana (600 - 500 Ma) was a Neoproterozoic supercontinent, which was formed by the fusion of fragments of Rodinia / Pannotia, the prior supercontinent (see also Proterozoic).

The occidental part of Gondwana, which contained ancient crust of Atlantica, merged during the so-called Brasiliano - Pan African orogenic cycle, constituting the South American Platform, the oldest part of todays South America.

When you travel through Southeast Brazil, you will easily recognize remnants of Gondwana in form of countless gneiss - granitic intrusive rocks which outcrop all along the coastal Serra do Mar mountain chain.
