The Atlantic Shield is one of the 3 shields of the South American Platform. Shields are large regions, where the Precambrian basement of a continent is exposed to the surface.

The Atlantic Shield is composed of the São Francisco Craton (SFC) in its center surrounded by several Neoproterozoic orogenic fold belts which for descriptive purposes were summarized in 3 geotectonic provinces: Mantiqueira (M), Borborema (B) and Tocantins (T).
