Brazil Tours / Geology - The Atlantic Shield is one of the 3 shields of the South American Platform and the geological foundation of the Atlantic Rainforest. Shields are large regions, where the Precambrian basement of a continent is exposed to the surface.

The Atlantic Shield was formed during the Neoproterozoic Brasiliano - Pan African Cycle, when it was part of West Gondwana.

It is composed of the São Francisco Craton (SFC) in its center surrounded by several orogenic fold belts which for descriptive purposes were grouped into 3 geotectonic provinces: Mantiqueira (M), Borborema (B) and Tocantins (T).
