Seasonal Rainforest

We conduct guided hiking / trekking & mountain bike tours through the seasonal rainforest ecosystems of the Atlantic Rainforest biome in southeast Brazil.

The deciduous and semideciduous seasonal rainforest (floresta estacional decidual and semidecidual) ecosystems occur mostly in the higher and cooler elevations of Brazil´s mountain ranges.

The seasonal rainforest is characterized by a tropical summer and a dry winter (different than the nonseasonal tropical rainforest that has no dry season). It is called semideciduous / deciduous when it looses between 20 and 50% / more than 50% of its foliage during the dry season.

Similar to the tropical rainforest ecosystems, also the seasonal rainforests can be further divided into so - called altitudinal zones. Examples of deciduous seasonal rainforests can be found at the border of the Caatinga - Biome in Northeast Brazil. Semideciduous seasonal rainforests can be found in Southeast Brazil, among others in the following protected areas:

    • Serra da Mantiqueira and Itatiaia National Park
    • State Parks: Carlos Botelho, Cantareira, PETAR and Campos do Jordão
