Polar Zone

In the southern hemisphere the cold temperate climate zone extends from the Antarctic Circle at 66,5 degrees south latitude and the South Pole. The angle of the plane of the sun's apparent path varies between 23,5° and 0° and the angle of the sun's rays (Solar Altitude) between 47 and 0 degrees. Day length varies between +/- 0 h and +/- 24 h from 12 h at the Equinox and the average temperatures are between minus 17 and minus 33 degrees Celsius.

At the Antarctic Circle the sun doesn´t set (rise) for one day during the Solstices on 21st of December (Summer Solstice) and 21st of June (Winter Solstice). Towards the South Pole the number of polar days (24 h daylight) and polar nights (24 h night) constantly increase. At the South Pole the Sun doesn´t set for half a year during summer and doesn´t rise for half a year during winter.
